Key Concepts
How profiles, scopes, and the job queue control Autotag behavior.

Autotag builds on Revit concepts you already know—views, categories, tag families—and adds a few of its own. Understanding these helps you predict and control what Autotag does.
Profiles
A profile is like a view template for tagging. It defines:
- Which categories to tag (Ducts, Pipes, Equipment, etc.)
- Which tag families to use per category
- System type filters (e.g., only Supply Air ducts)
- Placement rules (density, leader usage, overlap handling)
Every Tagging command uses the active profile. Changing the profile changes what gets tagged and how.
Scope
Scope determines which elements Autotag considers. It works like this:
- No selection → tags all elements visible in the view that match the profile
- With selection → tags only the selected elements (including linked elements if you've selected them)
- Include Linked toggle → controls whether elements in linked models are tagged
Autotag respects your view's VG settings and crop region—elements hidden in the view won't be tagged.
Job Queue
Think of the job queue like Revit's print queue, but for tagging. When you run a Tagging command:
- The job is added to the queue
- The Jobs panel shows progress (view name, status, elapsed time)
- You can continue working in Revit while the job runs
- Multiple jobs queue up and process sequentially
You can cancel a running job or retry a failed one from the Jobs panel.
Tag Families
Autotag uses your project's loaded tag families—the same ones you'd use with Tag by Category. If a category doesn't have a tag family loaded, Autotag skips those elements.
Overlap Rules
When elements are close together, Autotag uses your profile's overlap rules to handle tag collisions:
- Move: Shift tags to avoid overlaps
- Leader: Add a leader line to move the tag away
- Skip: Don't tag elements that would cause overlaps
- Stack: Group nearby tags vertically
You can fine-tune these in the Profile Editor to match your documentation standards.
Server Connection
Autotag connects to Bimrock servers for license validation and to process certain operations. An internet connection is required for initial activation; after that, Autotag can work offline for short periods.
